THE
PROPOSAL By Anton Checkhov |
Directed
by Cal Turner CAST Highly original and inventive, this touching yet funny play examines the desperate helplessness which happens when needed communication cannot be voiced. THE STORY: Three grown siblings return from their parents' graves after attending a funeral, a time when so much needs to be articulated and understood. And yet, somehow, they cannot bridge the gulf of self-consciousness which separates them, and thus, we hear only their spoken stage directions which are normally meant to be unheard by the audience. The effect is oblique speech, as though they were present and yet not present, but what is unspoken becomes eloquently clear -- and, in the end, reveals the deeper truths that direct statement could only hint at. |
Directed
By Michael Karaffa CAST Takes Place on Chubukov's Estate 1888 THE STORY:
Lomov appears at the Chubukov estate to seek the hand of
Chubukov's
daughter, Natalya. After a disagreement ensues, Lomov is driven
away, but she welcomes his return
after she discovers his reason for being there. He
recuperates from his imaginary ailments after they kiss, prompted by her
father. Natalya accepts him, but, once again disagreement comes between them, |

The Directors Workshop is a program at Theatre of
Western Springs to encourage the development of directorial and acting skills, and
technical proficiency. Generally, it is a collection or two or more one-act or short
plays directed by members of the Directors' Workshop program, performed by TWS Actives who
have completed at least their initial studio workshop training, and crewed by TWS
volunteers. There is no admission fee. Donations to the theatre are
always welcome.

Western Springs programs, call (708) 246-4043.
